Your Future Promotion Depends on your Wellness
What you’re thinking and how well you’re thinking is directly tied to your next career move.
Do you think creatively? Can you solve complex problems? Do you think critically or just take things as they come? Do you have fear- based thinking or growth and opportunity thinking?
Individual thought and critical thinking are directly linked to your personal wellness. Wait, what??
Maybe your’e saying:
“how the heck does that connect to my health and wellness?”
Ok, great! Let me tell you!
But first, here’s one reason it matters to you right now.
According to the World Economic forum (article link in footer), 50% of all employees will need re-skilling by 2025 because of advances in technology. They also report that critical thinking and problem-solving skills are top skills employers will seek out; along with active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility.
All of those skills are intertwined with your level of innate stress, inflammation, quality of your sleep, what you’re eating and how your exercising.
Many Americans live with a default setting of “stressed”, “overwhelmed” and “busy”. It is so ingrained in their being, that some don’t even notice it. They have been feeling like crap for so long that they forgot what if feels like to feel vibrant, joyful and energized.
When that’s your default setting, stress builds. This leads to constant low levels of inflammation in your body and mind. And inflammation leads to dis-ease. That dis-ease shows up as feeling anxious, unable to release unwanted weight, feeling frustrated, irritable, having a non-stop thinking mind, skin problems, low sex drive. It can also show up as a disease like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity.
When you are getting good sleep, eating whole and nutritious foods, meditating a little, getting outside in nature and in the sun for a walk, taking seriously good care of your gut and balancing your rigorous exercise with something less stress-inducing like Pilates or yoga you will:
-
Improve your immune system
-
Reduce anxiety
-
Boost your creativity
-
Improve your mood
-
Improve your sex drive
-
Improve your energy levels
-
Improve your skin irritations, headaches, stomach aches, body tension
-
Improve your ability to focus
-
Maintaining a healthy weight and often loose excess weight
-
Reduce brain fog and fear based thinking
-
Help with injury prevention
-
Improve your ability to solve complex problems by effectively utilize the higher-functioning part of our brain.
Whew, that’s a long list. And probably not comprehensive. Sounds good, right?
But when you eat processed foods, sleep poorly or not long enough, stay always connected to your electronics and work, only engage in stress-inducing exercise programs, sit too much, think all.the.time, don’t spend “non productive” time outside you will:
-
Live in fear-based thinking. Your higher level thinking brain processes get switched off
-
Decrease your ability to problem solve
-
Increase stress in mind and body
-
Increase inflammation
-
Suppress your immune system
-
Be grumpy, frustrated, anxious, snippy
-
Disrupt your hormones that regulate hunger (and many more metabolic functions)
-
Disrupt your metabolism such as increasing cravings for more sugar and more simple carbohydrate foods.
Basically, you’ll continue to feel like crap in your body and your thinking will be clouded.
The simple (but often not easy) solution is to incorporate good daily routines, and repeat them over time. Make it your lifestyle. I like to call it a holistic wellness lifestyle.
My solutions are not complicated and it’s not the next, sexy new thing. But it works. And isn’t that what we’re after anyway?
What to do every day:
-
Sleep 7-9 hours per night
-
Practice mindful breathing or meditation every day
-
Walk out in nature (no devices in your hand or in your ears)
-
Eat whole foods
-
Balance your exercise program with Yoga and/or Pilates
-
Take your gut health seriously
-
Prioritize your needs
